SOiL castor oil is sustainably sourced from the seeds of the Castor plant’s bean in India.
Many of the older generation will remember castor oil as a household item, not very fondly though, due to its taste when used to relieve constipation. Today, Castor oil is promoted more widely for cosmetic purposes.
Castor oil is sustainably produced from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis) and belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Castor oil differs from other vegetable oils in its composition of fatty acids. Other oils contain mostly linoleic acid and oleic acid, and a small percentage of palmitic acid and stearic acid. These are called conventional fatty acids, and they can differ in concentration from oil to oil. Castor’s oil-rich seeds contain a triglyceride called ricinoleates. Risinoleic acid is an omega-9 fatty acid. Only a small percentage of the four conventional fatty acids are present in castor oil.
Castor Oil Uses
Wrinkles & Skin Tone
Castor oil is known as ‘Nature’s Botox’ because like Botox, it smooths out wrinkles, plumps up skin, and reduces sagging due to its powerful hydrating effect. Skin tone can be evened out over time with regular use, and it works well in combination with other essential oils that contain vitamins and healing properties to assist in the reduction of hyperpigmentation, such as rosehip oil and frankincense oil. Adding these essential oils will also dilute the castor oil, which makes it easier to apply to your face.
Skin Care Recipes that include Castor Oil from our Health & Wellness Library:
As a Laxative
Taking castor oil orally is believed to alleviate constipation, and because it can go so deep into the skin, it can transport its nutrients into your body, detoxify, help with bloating, and improve digestion by rubbing it on the stomach, or by using it in a castor oil pack.
As a Moisturizer
The thick consistency and its richness in fatty acids (ricinoleic acid) locks in moisture and hydrates from within by drawing water from the air. And because our castor oil is organic and hexane free, it means no chemicals were used to refine this castor oil, so it is suitable for your skin and face without the harmful additives found in commercial moisturizers.
For Acne treatment
The Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of castor oil assist with the treatment of acne by fighting acne causing bacteria and soothing inflamed skin. Castor Oil is a comedogenic, so it generally shouldn’t clog pores, however, this is possible in some rare cases.
Hair growth
Although there is no scientific proof that castor oil speeds up hair growth, what it does do, is it deeply penetrates hair follicles and nourishes the scalp, and a healthy scalp is the key to healthy hair growth, producing stronger, smoother, healthier looking hair.

If you’ve tried pure castor oil and found it to be too thick and oily, try mixing it with coconut or jojoba oil for a thinner consistency, especially if you have fine hair.
Interesting Facts
The oil-rich castor bean seeds contain the poison ricin, one of the most toxic substances known to man, and consumption of chewed seeds can be lethal. Ricin is water-soluble and extracted in the preparation of the oil and is not present in castor oil.
Castor plants are thought to have originated from East Africa and Asia but have spread around the world.
Precautions
Do not use castor oil while pregnant as it can induce labour.
If castor oil is used to alleviate constipation, check with your doctor, as it may cause gastrointestinal side effects, like diarrhea, vomiting and cramping.
Castor oil can be used directly on the skin, however, some individuals with sensitive skin, who are prone to allergies or conditions like dermatitis might have allergic reactions. In this case, dilute the castor oil with other carrier oils like coconut oil, almond oil, or Jojoba oil, and do a small patch test on your skin before use.
